HERE, WE WILL RESURRECT YOU

Our church isn’t the extreme dress-up kind of church, but Matt puts on a tie anyway. We pull my jeans from yesterday out of the dryer and I wear my own clothes again.

My parents wait for us in the narthex, the foyer outside the sanctuary. They wave through the glass, with big smiles.

“Narthex is a weird word,” Matt says as we approach.

“It’s only the entryway to the weirdness,” I say. “Symbolically drinking blood is a little bit weirder.”

“Touché.”

We climb the wide white steps and shed our coats, adding them to the row of metal hangers on the rack to our right.

“Hi, Mr. Sanders. It’s nice to see you.” Matt shakes my dad’s hand. “Hi, Mrs. Sanders.”

“Hello, Matt. Welcome to Resurrection.”

Our church’s actual name is the Resurrection of Christ Church, and so that’s always what we say to newcomers, but today it strikes me as super awkward. Like, here, you will be resurrected.

“Thanks. So glad I could come,” he adds, winking at me after they turn away.

“Me too. It means a lot to have you backing me up,” I whisper in return, keeping my expression serene.
